As many begin to embrace manifestation, energy healing, mindset work and other concepts of spirituality, these newfound techniques awaken a thirst for knowledge. We can’t help but want to know how all this stuff works. Our brains search what they already comprehend, scanning for that thing which is bigger than us–bigger than everything else–and we find it. The Universe with a capital u. This is the term that leaves newbies feeling comfortable because it’s not offensive–except perhaps to God. It’s not associated with any religion and it doesn’t carry any baggage from a religious upbringing long abandoned.
You know what the universe is. Here in Pennsylvania, students have it in their curriculum as early as third grade and by fifth grade they are creating science projects with foam balls and answering questions on state tests. I never learned about the secret power of the universe in any of my classes and here is the reason. The universe is a thing. The same Source that created you, animals, planets and the solar system also created the universe. The universe is not God.
God is a spiritual concept, and if you want to understand God and spirituality you need to stop depending on your knowledge of things. This is the very reason God attempted to steer Adam and Eve away from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Living there in the garden, it was all God all the time. Life was good! Adam and Eve only knew perfection–God. Eating from that tree led to duality. Banished from the garden, Adam and Eve now had the knowledge of all that is not necessarily good, such as work, hunger, loss and struggle. Our goal as human souls on earth is to refocus on all that is good.
Awakening, enlightenment, and being born again as Spirit are possible for you. The process happens as we release and shift from living primarily in the physical world of our ego to living primarily in the spiritual world of our soul. This involves experiencing and believing in the unseen over that which is seen. It requires knowing ourselves as souls and not as bodies. So, while referring to God as The Universe doesn’t hurt anyone, neither will it propel you toward enlightenment.
They say there is a calling for everyone, and mine is to help others traverse their spiritual path. While many believe this path to be a journey, I’m happy to report there is actually a goal. Whether you call it nirvana, heaven, enlightenment, awakening, truth or something else, the results are similar; peace, understanding, compassion, wisdom and joy. In most formal religions, participants know what they are aiming for, but they don’t necessarily believe it is possible for them personally. Enlightenment was for Buddha, heaven for Jesus and awakening for a list of lucky or lying gurus. Since it’s difficult to experience what we don’t believe to be possible, this is unfortunate thinking for the spiritual seeker. Awakening is possible for everyone, but acknowledging the true source of all creation is an important first step.
Hugs and blessings,
