It’s Sunday night of Memorial Day weekend and technically, the holiday weekend is not over. I’m so glad, because after hosting a big bash yesterday for my daughter’s 16th birthday, I need another day! What I most certainly DON’T need, is another day of cheesecake and pretzel M&M’s…know what I mean? All those left-overs beckoning me from the garage refrigerator, just begging me to come out there and ravish them. Where on earth is Will Power when I need him?
The truth is, I know exactly what happened to Will. My name is Gina and I am a sugar addict. It’s been 1 hour and 47 minutes since my last fix (that banana cheesecake I referred to earlier). Usually I am very good…I know that it takes seven days to detox from sugar, and once I go through the horrible cravings and the headaches, I am good about avoiding it at all costs. With Will by my side, I can resist even my favorite desserts. But, every now and then there is a special occasion and I always think that one small piece won’t kill me. And, it doesn’t…but sugar is like a drug, which is defined as any absorbed substance that changes or enhances any physical or psychological function in the body. So let’s see, it lowers immune system function, affects mental function and can lead to cavities, mood swings, weight gain and diabetes. And here’s something you won’t read in any medical journal. Sugar slays Will Power. Lays him out cold, so that he is of absolutely no use to us whatsoever.
I need Will back. So, tonight the rest of the cheesecake went in the trash. I don’t see it as a waste, either. First, I didn’t buy it (sorry Aunt Helen! It was great while it lasted, and I savored every bite!), and more importantly, I am not a human trash can. I am a goddess! Everyone knows that goddesses eat grapes.
So, if Will Power hasn’t been at your house for a while, lay off the sugar. Drink herbal teas and munch on some raw nuts, seeds and fruits. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water to flush it out of your system. I promise that you will feel better, and when you feel better, Will Power will help you do better. Seven days. You can do it!
