Obedience makes the difference when it comes to living your faith. As a young adult, I wanted nothing to do with the virtue of obedience. My ego ruled and no one was going to tell me what to do, especially God. I had felt like a sinner for all my life and I was done with that. I escaped from the church and from guilt, but I couldn’t escape from sin. Let’s face it, if you aren’t listening to God, who are you listening to?
The devil is sly. He comes in through the back door like an old friend. The devil knows that he would scare the pants off most people if he showed up in their life dressed in red and holding a pitchfork. Oh no, he is much more subtle.
The devil shows up in glossy nude magazines, twenty-four hour porn channels, high-end strip clubs and erotic romance novels that make us lose our reverence for sex and the human relationship. These things may not seem evil in and of themselves, but they open the mind to sex outside of marriage which breaks down the very sanctity of marriage. There is a reason the divorce rate is over 50%, and I would say that it is directly related to the idea that sex is entertainment and necessary for anything other than strengthening a marriage and reproduction. Our fantasy wedding has become far more important than the sacred covenant that God had planned for us.
You might also see the devil at work advertising the latest and greatest new models of things you already own. Instead of basking in gratitude for all you have, you find yourself wishing you could have a more luxurious handbag, a bigger house and a newer car. Nothing is ever good enough. The devil will push you to work harder and longer so that you can acquire more, all at the cost of your family and God. If you barely have time to mow your huge lawn, how will you find time to pray? God encourages poverty and sharing within our community. This doesn’t mean we have nothing. It means that we have what we need and make sure that others do, too, so we can all focus on living in alignment with God.
The devil loves to increase your self-doubt. To insure that you aren’t reminded of your status as a child of God and your own inherent perfection, he is consistently sending messages of lack, deficiency, unworthiness and inability. In this way, he widens the opportunity to slip in and befriend you with drugs, alcohol, depression, narcissism and deeply held hatred toward yourself and others. Reading God’s word in the Bible provides you with the truth of your inherent worth and value.
Sometimes though, it doesn’t seem that way. Today a client asked me if 100% of the Bible is true. I think that if one thing is true in the Bible, then all of it has to be true. God lets us know the truth in His word, He is not asking for our opinion of what we think the truth to be. Peter and the early Bishops and Popes went to great lengths to make sure that the word of God was passed along without corruption. It’s the whole reason there is hierarchy in the church. Otherwise, as we can see now that so many Christian faiths and Bible versions exist, man would take it upon himself to make his own decisions about God’s truth.
A big overlooked part of faith is obedience. Our egos don’t like the word obedience and they certainly don’t like submitting themselves to others or to God. But that is exactly what we must do to live in the presence of the angels and saints here on earth. Only when we submit to the will of God are we free of the ills of ego which strip us of our peace.
The next time you find yourself struggling with God’s word, ask Him to show you where you are wrong. The Holy Spirit is happy to explain the truth, but you must be willing to remove the blinders of ego, have faith and obey.
Much love and many blessings,
